"Conventional" and "tested" are not the same word. Some conclusions are secure because they survived direct examination — a scan, a dated sample, an excavation compared against a text. Others are secure because nothing has yet contradicted them and they've become the working answer. Both can be reasonable. They are not the same kind of reasonable, and the difference matters the moment new evidence shows up.

Precision hides its assumptions well. A measurement is real evidence. The story built around it is a separate claim, and it can be far weaker than the number that supposedly proves it.

Corroborating a setting isn't corroborating the story. If an excavated layout matches an odd architectural detail in an ancient text, that's genuine support — for the setting. It says nothing about the events the text goes on to describe.

When uncertainty gets treated as a failure, something always rushes in to complete the record — either an institution waves an inconvenient anomaly away, or a promoter treats that same anomaly as proof of whatever story is more exciting. Neither is skepticism. Both start with the conclusion they want and work backward.

Three verdicts, never four

This book doesn't sort history into "true" and "false." Every case ends with one of three verdicts — and "Unresolved" is treated as a result, not a placeholder to fill in later.

Strong

The claim was directly examined with a method built to answer it, on suitable evidence, and it survived the strongest counter-case. Strong doesn't mean eternal — it means the burden of proof has been met.

Partial

Something real has been tested — but not the whole claim. The date might be solid while the origin stays disputed. Useful evidence becomes misleading only when it's presented as the complete picture.

Unresolved

The available evidence can't yet separate the leading explanations. Not a polite word for "mysterious," and not license to pick whichever answer is more dramatic. The case stays open.

Before assigning a verdict, every chapter runs the same checks: state the claim in one sentence, without adding implications. Identify what was actually measured, and by whom. Confirm the method can answer that specific question. Check provenance and contamination. Separate the finding from the interpretation stacked on top of it. Then, and only then — Strong, Partial, or Unresolved, never upgraded into more certainty than the documentation earned.

I'm skeptical by default, but not as an ideology — skepticism is a tool for slowing a claim down long enough to actually inspect it, not a license to reject inconvenient evidence before reading the source. That standard has to run in both directions.

If someone says an ancient machine performed a specific calculation, I want to know which gears, inscriptions, and scans support it. If someone dismisses an anomaly as impossible, I want to know whether the material was actually examined or just filed under a familiar category. If a genetic claim names Cleopatra, I want evidence tied to Cleopatra — not a chain of proposed relatives with the inconvenient verbs quietly removed.
